exploring lithuania…..

Sometimes, I think it is important to pencil in a little adventure somewhere on the calendar, so I decided to go to Vilnius again for the weekend….. but this time by myself.  Now, although my whole entire experience in Russia is essentially an adventure I embarked on “alone,” I do not usually travel places on my own and this past weekend, I found out how amazing it can be.  Granted, I love traveling with my husband and friends, but I think it is important to go places alone sometimes because you become a better traveler – more savvy and a bit fearless.  In general, there are things that would have terrified me before coming to live in Russia and now I think I have a lot less fear about things that need not be feared, as well as a healthy respect for that which should be respected (and sometimes, avoided).  Currently, I am already plotted another trip alone – maybe to the Ukraine or Belarus (it might be worth the visa).  Anyhow, here is a glimpse of lovely Lithuania!  It is such an interesting country with a tragic history during World War II and the Sovietization process.  If you ever find yourself in Vilnius, the KGB museum is a must-visit….. there you can explore the cells were people were tortured and executed.  It was a heavy two hour visit and I’ve included two of the paintings outside of the museum at the end of my post.  I believe they were all painted by schoolchildren – I found them fascinating.  Please enjoy this trip to Lithuania along with me and I hope to bring you more scenes from the Post-Soviet space in the near future!

  1. Oh wow! These photos present a completely different view of Lithuania than the one that I had always imagined. Thank you so much for sharing them and congrats on being Freshly Pressed! 🙂

  2. How charming! I have never been to the region. And how fun to be living in Russia. My partner and I lived for a year in Vietnam and another in Haiti–amazing experiences!
And congrats on Freshly Pressed. Hang on for the ride!

  3. My sister and I just got back from a 4 week trip in Lithuania! We spent most of our time in Klaipeda (which is totally worth a weekend trip, by the way…check it out), but we were able to get to Vilnius on a weekend. Gorgeous city! Thanks so much for the reminder photos 🙂

  4. These photos are wonderful! I’ve always been interested in Lithuania – my great-grandparents were born there – but I haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit. Thanks for sharing a glimpse into this beautiful country 🙂

  5. My family is from Lithuania and I’ve always wanted to go. I lived in France but never made it over to my Baltic homeland. I love your pictures. I’ll have to show my dad. He’ll love them. Great post! Thanks!

  6. I love your photos. Must have been a fascinating trip. I’ve been to Estonia three times and enjoyed those visits a lot, but I’ve never been to Lithuania. I had a friend from there, but unfortunately we’ve lost touch.

  7. Nice photos! My family came from Lithuania and I can´t wait to show your blog to my father!
We now live in Brazil since 2º war.
I really want to visit Vilnius next year!

  8. well i been through the seasons in Lithuania. its a beautiful place for visiting during the summers. i wouldn’t recommend during the winters where the temperature drops 20 below zero lol. i am a student here in Vilnius so the sightseeing comes with the studies 😉

  9. Absolutely beautiful photographs – your sense of composition and colour are great. I agree with you; I think we observe and respond differently on our own, so it’s good to experience that now and again.

  10. Thanks for the beautiful photos. I can’t help but noticed your habit for tilting. Your technique for vignetting results in very profound pictures. Simply marvelous.

  11. Being from Vilnius myself, I’m really happy to find this kind of post 🙂 Hope you really enjoyed your time in Lithuania. Oh, and travelling alone is an unbelieveable experience indeed, it’s all about the right time and the right place.
    Great photographs! cheers

  12. Hi Lindsay, I discovered your blog this morning and am enjoying the stories as well as your photography. My family and I lived in Warsaw, Poland from 2001-2004; we traveled throughout Eastern Europe and made it over to Germany, Sweden, and France as well. Before moving to Poland, in late November 2000 we traveled to Lithuania… initially landing in Vilnius and then spending two weeks in Kalipedia.

    Your photographs, a beautiful expression.

  14. My goodness thank you for this! I had a friend from Lithuania at university, and he used to come back from visits to home with tons of lush photos much like this. My favorite (if I even have one; they’re all so lovely!) is the babushka and her flowers. Makes me want to start a “travel to Lithuania” savings jar in my kitchen.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful place!

    xoxo

  15. Such interesting and lovely photos. Would love to go there. I could comment on every single picture, but to break it down…..the picture just below the one with the white cat_ I would love to see a close up of that Red Portraite. And the one entitled *waiting for the train* I laughed-cause if you look good, they are both making the exact same expression. Thank you for sharing these. what a beautiful place indeed.

  16. wow, an amazing place, im just came back from Budapest and Istanbul and they really look like, i love the colors on the pictures and yes, there are cityes where you can see the pain and sadness fron their past

  17. That is beautiful. Such a beautiful place, and so colorful!
Thank you for sharing this, and I agree; there is a special quality and a fearlessness with exploring alone 🙂 I’ve never wanted so badly to visit Lithuania as much as now after seeing your post! (Even their graffiti is beautiful). You’re so lucky, but I’ll be dreaming of it 😉

  18. This is beautiful. My grandparents are from Lithuania, but I’ve never been. Nice to see a bit of it through your eyes.

  20. What gorgeous photos! I love all the colors on the buildings. And I agree that sometimes traveling alone has great benefits. I spent six months in Edinburgh by myself (though I did make new friends) and I grew so much as a person because of that experience.

  21. Fabulous photos! I thought I would like to visit Estonia first but I think you may have changed my mind. I LOVE the art and graffiti amid the faded grandeur. If you haven’t been to Porto I think you’d like it. Thanks for sharing 😉 James.

  22. My parents were originally from Latvia, and I still have cousins there who I visit as often as I can. Riga is a beautiful city too, with much Art Nouveau architecture (look for Albert ielu).

  23. I love your writing, and I love your photography skills! I lived in Latvia for 3.5 years before and never in my eyes did I see the Baltic States as beautiful as yours. Though, my 3.5 years there did mark a very important page in the journey of my life! I’m looking forward to your next post : )

  24. My writing partner and BFF Lynda’s mother’s ancestry is from Lithuania. I know she would truly enjoy the beautiful photos of the people and the lovely natural and man made scenery of the Baltic state of Lithuania. BTW Lithuanian language she told me is the closest Eu. language to Sanscrit. I am impressed with your colorful, fascinating , inviting blog. Beckoning me there.

  25. Oh gosh, what a great thing is to travel alone! You know I’ve been living in Vilnius for a year but still some of places you found are unseen to me. A pity but I never played a visit to Uzupis like just exploring, I’ve been there several times, but never enjoying as much as when you wonder alone through places and see things that people usually pass by. 🙂 Thanks for great article about Vilnius. Just perfect! 🙂

  26. Great post and I love the pictures! They reflect something typical of the Baltic region: the contrasts – bright colours mixed with melancholy. That’s what makes it seem so mystical.

  28. Uau……. Thank you for sharing your own experience and thoughts with us. I have relatives there. It´s an amazing place, and amazing people! Your pictures are awesome, congratulations!!!!

  29. real nice photography. your eye is similar to my own, drawn to still life’s and simple beauty. the two last photos of the murals are haunting and i wonder about the children who might have painted them, as they appear very disturbed. my ancestry is Lithuanian and Ukrainian, and i like your blog. well done.

  30. Oh man, I was just in Ukraine last fall and it was wonderful. Your post is bringing back all sorts of memories of train trips through the countryside. How lovely! You have a great artistic eye and the pictures are gorgeous!

  31. I just stumbled across your blog from the WordPress page and I had to comment on this. I visited Lithuania in high school (we had an exchange program with a school in Vilnius). I remember it being rather drab, but I did visit in February and they had only been independent of the Soviet Union for a few years at that point. Even so, it was a special place and I’ve always hoped I can get back there at some point. Thank you for posting these incredible pictures. Brought back some great memories.

  32. i have a friend from lithuania. but it’s the first time i really get a look to this country. thanks for opening my eyes!

  33. I used to travel a lot alone. It will really make you more adapted and feel less fear about the place. These photos are amazing!

  34. really awesome pics…you have just captured the spirit of Lithunia…Telling an untold story 🙂

  35. This is pretty good!
I enjoy your photos and your comment.
Love the angle in many of them. The first one, the ‘wall of art’, the pink house behind the flowers, the grafitti, the cat!! (do you mind if I link this photo to my blog? giving you the proper credit of course), andd when you focuss on details.

  36. I have found myself quite interested in the Russian area ever since my nephew was adopted from an orphanage near the Black Sea… one thing I found intriguing about your photos was that there you have all these lovely, old European looking buildings, and the grannies who look like one expects Russian grannies to look, yet any one of those young girls could pop into my teen daughter’s group of friends and their fashion would be identical! The world is shrinking, I think.

    • As a lithuanian person, I truly dislike Lithuania being identified with “Russian area” (still, even though twenty years have passed since the USSR fell apart!). The culture of the Baltics has some pronounced differences from the slavic regions. If Lithuania sometimes looks very Russian, it is not because it is naturally that way, but because Russian – and Soviet, in general – culture had been imposed on us for half a century. AND we are part of the European Union now.

      • I thought the same thing.
For too long Lithuanian people where lumped together with other nations (be it Russians or at points in history Poles), I think they fully deserve remembering their distinctive character. The same goes to Latvia or Estonia.
        Greeting from Cracow

  37. What an eye you have for beauty! And what a glorious place. I spent a bit of time farther west in the Baltic in 1990. Leningrad,to be exact; Fortunately, now St.Petersburg. What times this people have witnessed, and splendor they have maintained.
    Thank you for posting

  38. These are the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen! So much green (my favorite color!). I’m of Lithuanian descent on my Dad’s side, but I’ve never been there and this has settled it, I have to go.

I found you today since this post was sitting right next to mine on Freshly Pressed. I know it’s just a coincidence, but it’s a fun coincidence.

  39. Really enjoyed this post. Love the images. Really lovely place. will go and visit there someday.

  40. Thank you so much for these pictures. I lived in the Baltic States for about two years from 94 to 96. I was in Vilnius for four of those months. Your pictures bring back many good memories.

  41. I know it is very simple, but I am feeling very homesick today….. the past few days have been very gray and so my pictures are also, but taking the time to share them with you all on my blog helps to lift my spirits somewhat and I am hopeful for the beautiful spring days that lie ahead…..

  42. Beautiful pictures!
I was just back from Bulgaria and I also recommend you to visit it too! 🙂
PS. I’m going to take photography lecture this semester. I’m interested in learning it, really. Wish me luck! 😉

  43. You’ve captured beautiful scenes and moments. I specifically like the angle where you were from that old building’s door. & it must be a painter who lives there in the house with flower window boxes! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed 🙂

  44. Great post and beautiful pictures! (really, the pictures are lovely!). This inspired me to explore my hometown and take some snapshots from colorful corners and buildings. And congratulations for being freshly pressed!

  45. Hi Lecomer
The photos are great, the colour abounds. The lighting reminds me of photos of England ( I haven’t been there). It certainly allows for detail. I like MG 8001; the worn wall with sprays of flowers and the picture of a girl which has its own interest. Regards, Wil

  47. Great post, beautiful images! I’d love to travel more often. I’ve only been to a handful of countries in Europe. Russia seems totally different and interesting in its own way.

  48. “Granted, I love traveling with my husband and friends, but I think it is important to go places alone sometimes because you become a better traveler – more savvy and a bit fearless.”

I have yet to travel alone, but I’m sure this is very true. Well said.

  49. Lovely pictures! I am Lithuanian myself, just got back to London from my holiday back home. Next time you have to visit West part of Lithuania by the seaside and go to the famous Curonian Spit, it’s included into UNESCO 🙂 Little place called Nida is so beautiful that even I forget sometimes it’s still Lithuania 🙂 Visit Klaipeda, it’s a beautiful city, lovely old town and the old harbour 🙂

  50. Clearly I’m ignorant about Lithuania. It’s geographic location was never a mystery to me, but the life, color, street art, and depth of the community that lived there was definitely not something I was aware of. Thanks for the enlightenment 🙂

  51. Wow, your blog was really good and interesting to read! Even the first line made me want to read more. Its fun, playful, adventurous and inspiring. I would love to travel someday to a lovely place like this.

By the way, I used to be a photographer, and might I say your camera shots are astounding and beautiful.

  52. OUTSTANDING pictures! My relatives on my dad’s side are from Lithuania, and I’ve never been there. This was a great way to see a bit of my history. Thank you for sharing. I now know where my love of colors comes from!

  53. I’m so happy to find your blog! I’m very interesting for Russia and East Europa country. I want to learn more and more about it, and to visit it! So your blog is like a treasure to me.
Your photos are wonderful! It’s amazing because architecture in Lithuania is a little similar to Italia; but it isn’t the same atmosphere.

(ps: sorry for my poor english! i’m only a french student)

  54. Great photos…I went to Lithuania a few years ago during the summer and it was awesome. I didn’t know what to expect, the beaches at Palanga were my favorite…. some sunshine and a few cold Svyturys. Driving across the country there is fun on the open roads, not much traffic… I had a great time.

  55. I m from Lithuania, Vilnius and what can I say… your fotos reveals the spirit of the city! It is like that – the old town is full of art, colors and nice people and a bit of soviet feeling still. I m out of country for one yeart now and this article really touched my heart!

For the next time, or for other travellers I strongly recommend to visit Neringa peninsula. It is totally diferent beautiful place. The main thing about all Eastern Europe is that these countries are changing very fast, if someone wants to see how soviet countries live, it´s the right time to do that!

and I am so happy that I found your blog! I hope Russia will be the next stop for me 🙂

  56. Your pictures are fantastic! There is so much spirit and color in Lithuania – I had no idea! Thank you for sharing and giving us all look into this beautiful country.

Traveling is fun with a group, but there is something soul-changing about traveling alone. This summer I spent a few weeks in London by myself and it made the city take on a whole new meaning. I saw things I’d never noticed before (London and I have met on three other occasions) and discovered parts of myself I didn’t know were there.

    Great post! 🙂

  57. “Sometimes, I think it is important to pencil in a little adventure somewhere on the calendar …” As your Dad, I like to think that some of your yearning for adventure came from me.
Beautiful pics Lindz. I look forward to being able to see all the ones you haven’t had a chance to post yet.

  58. very cool! I love to travel…Right now im working on a rather difficult project, finding out what the most unrecognized problem is for humanity.. if anyone has any thoughts on that id be very greatful

  59. I enjoyed your photos very much. When I was in Prague the summer before last, probably the best instance I can remember is walking over the St. Charles bridge by myself. Though I had a group with me that was waiting by a coffee shop at one end it was amazing to walk alone along the streets, through the shops and among the people. Please keep writing.

  60. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. I have roots in Lithuania, but have never seen it portrayed so colorfully.

  61. I plan to travel to Europe and explore most of the countries there; I always though Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia were countries that I probably wouldn’t visit because they’re not as “popular” as the other countries but thanks to you I plan on going to these places now. Amazing pictures.

  62. Beautiful pictures, full of lovely colours! I started to think to travel to Baltic states, it must be amazing journey. The only country in Europe I’ve ever visited is Germany, and I found nice experience there.
    See you later 🙂

  63. All I can say is “Wow!!!” My grandparents were from Lithuania, they came here during the war. I’ve always had a fascination but never an opportunity to visit. My grandparents never spoke of it and rarely spoke the language once arriving in America. I think that’s probably a shame because it looks like I’ve missed out on a rich cultural heritage. At least I now know where my love of color comes from…

  64. Love the pictures! I like how they turn every corner of the town into a creative artistic corner, either in painting, graffitti, or architecture!! Beautiful place & a definite “must-see”

  65. It is a very nice place . thank you for sharing your experience in this lovely place. It is so amazing to travel alone because no body will ask you to hurry up.

  67. Visited in 2003/taught in Lithuania summer 2005/ went to the castle w/ a student and his family for all the trappings-jousting, drama, etc…. the Hill of Crosses…….the museum in Riga- memorable as well-thanks for the very delightful visuals ! 🙂

  68. Your pictures are gorgeous. Currently I am living in Moldova for the next 2 years, I am hoping to visit up that way before I return to the US.

  69. I was born in Lithuania and lived there for 8 years before moving to England. It’s so odd looking at the country from a visitor’s eyes – I think those of us who lived/live there forget that, amongst the drab Soviet apartment blocks, there’s still some character left. Very glad that WordPress brought our attention to your beautiful photos 🙂

    • Thank you 🙂 I use the Canon 5D Mark II and I use primarily a 24-105 mm lens and my 70-200 mm lenses. All these pictures were taken with these two lenses.

  70. Hi There:

In enjoyed your stunning pictures. The look so delicate, almost like a painting. Would you like to share with us what kind of camera you are using. I’m an amateur photographer and would like to follow your path.

    Thank you for sharing,

    Omar Upegui R.
    Republic of Panama, Central America

    • Thank you so much 🙂 I use the Canon 5D Mark II – I used to work as a photographer professionally, so that is why I use this one. I love Canon – I began taking pictures first with a Canon Point and Shoot and moved up from there. Good luck to you!

      • Hi Lecomer:

Thank you for sharing the name of your camera. I’m saving to acquire a DSLR camera because they can take better pictures than my modest Canon PowerShot A720 IS. I love your work. Keep it up. Your neck of the woods is fascinating.

        Regards,

        Omar.-

  71. I was looking at your photographs and I thought how colorful is the city! U know! It seems in my own country black and white is dominant. For instance I rarely see a red car here, most of them are gray, white, etc. However our taxis are yellow 😉 I know this make us depress in some extent 😦

  72. I was born in Finland and came to Canada as a young girl, I had hoped to travel the Baltics at some point in my life but alas not to bee. I love your pictures hope to see more at some future date.

  73. These pictures are beautiful!! I’ve tried searching for pictures of Lithuania- my boyfriend is there for a year and I was wondering what it was like there- but have never found anything ‘satisfiable’. Until now, that is ;]

  74. Great shot! There’s another place I’d recommend visiting in Lithuania: Kaunas. I don’t know about you, but I was plenty impressed with three-story shark tank in a shopping mall outside the town. Plus, along the road from Vilnius, you have this very Soviet-looking power plant (though I hear it’s not nuclear).

  75. Vilnius is my home town, I was born and raised in Uzupis, glad u enjoyed it!! The top few pics of Vilnius are the streets I used to walk up and down for years. I live in Canada now though, but went back to visit for almost a month in June :)) and I can just tell you…there’s no place like home :p

  76. I spent a summer in Klaipeda, Lithuania a few years ago–one of the best summers I ever had. These photos make me miss it so much. If you haven’t been yet, I’d also recommend Riga, Latvia. That was my weekend trip away and your photography eye would capture the city well!

  77. i’m from vilnius, and as someone mentioned in one of the earlier comments, i haven’t seen lithuania portrayed more beautifully before! such vivid colours, amazing… i especially like how the first shot is dominated by the national lithuanian colours (yellow, green and red) – intentional? 🙂 thanks for sharing such a great image of my country with the others!

  78. Oh my! Every picture you took is breathtaking! Splendid job. Hey, I envy you there. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. By the way, what camera did you use? Awesome!

  79. Thanks for the fantastic blog post and it is nice to see such a postive blog that offers so much value so thank you for that.

  80. I love photographic entries. I have two great friends from Lithuania, who are currently residing in the U.S. So I think I will share your blog with them!

I live in Vienna, Austria with my partner and our daughter. I have noticed that the northeastern part of Europe are very bold and brave when it comes to painting their houses in bright colours! I adore bright colours, they make the houses seem lively.

  81. Hi,

I’m from Lithuania and it’s an honor for me seeing these pictures. They’re great!
P.S. Tip: When you go to a country alone, try asking for good places on the internet. You have a blog and people read it. Ask people for good places to visit. I could have offered you great places in Vilnius 🙂

  82. I love all your photos! Gorgeous!
I am wondering, though, how is the internet over there? I’m about to go to Italy for three months and I hear it is hard to find quick internet to download (as in, if I were to download this many pictures it would take foreverrrr.)

  83. This is absolutely beautiful. The pictures of the mural at the end made such a sharp contrast against the other landscape and everyday photos. I mean, these last couple of photos really showed a splash of history and pain, but it’s interesting that reminders of pain and the past were still art, just like your photos of pretty landscape were art. Not to say that your other photos weren’t beautiful, but these last ones really hooked into me.

  84. […] Sometimes, I think it is important to pencil in a little adventure somewhere on the calendar, so I decided to go to Vilnius again for the weekend….. but this time by myself.  Now, although my whole entire experience in Russia is essentially an adventure I embarked on "alone," I do not usually travel places on my own and this past weekend, I found out how amazing it can be.  Granted, I love traveling with my husband and friends, but I think it i … Read More […]

  85. Your photos are gorgeous and amazing! You really captured the feeling on film. Lithuania looks very similar to Tallinn, Estonia…another amazing place to visit.

    Congrats on FP! 🙂

  86. These are some beautiful pictures of a very interesting place:) Makes me really want to travel even more. My family was originally from Russia then they moved to Yugoslavia and now over time we are in the US. I am so interested in Russian culture.

  87. Hi Lindsay

I just back from Vilnius on Saturday night, was there from 16th to the 20th, our paths may have passed without even knowing

  89. Thank you for all of your comments! I was very surprised when I found all the e-mails in my inbox, as I had been traveling and did not know that I had been “freshly pressed.” I hope you have enjoyed the photos and I hope to travel the Baltic states more in the future! Please stay tuned….. eventually I will post photos from Tallinn and Riga and, of course, I will have more from Russia in the coming months 🙂 Many of you inquired as to what camera I use – I used to be a professional photographer before I went back to university and so I currently carry a Canon 5D Mark II. It would still be a dream-come-true to be a successful photojournalist or travel editorial photographer, but we shall have to see where that dream will go in the future. For the time being, I will continue to study in Russia and travel the Post-Soviet space! Thank you all again and please keep following as you wish 🙂

  90. Isn’t it amazing? I love the place considering I knew nothing about before your pics. There is something about following the trip through the lense of someone who knows how to take a ripping photo! I love the boy sitting on the balustrade in front of the grand doorway. The peeling paint and broken stonework really do it for me. Great shots and thanks again for showing me something new.
